The binocular argument, settled
8x42 or 10x42 is the wrong question. Weight, close focus and eye relief decide whether you actually carry the things, and nobody argues about those.
Ask which binoculars to buy and you will get a magnification number back within about four seconds. 8x42, usually, with the confidence of someone settling the matter. It is not a bad answer. It is an answer to a question that does not decide much.
Here is what actually separates binoculars you use from binoculars you own.
Weight, which is the whole thing
A pair of binoculars you leave at home has no optical qualities. The practical ceiling is somewhere around 700 grams for most people on a long walk, and every gram past that gets negotiated with at the door.
This is the reason 42mm objectives beat 50mm for general birding, and the reason a lot of people quietly end up with 32mm. You give up some low-light performance. You gain the binoculars being around your neck at 6am on a Tuesday, which is worth more low-light performance than the 50s were ever going to provide.
Close focus, which nobody mentions
The distance at which the binoculars will still focus. Cheap pairs stop at 5 or 6 metres. Good ones get under 2.
It sounds like a specification for pedants until the first time a warbler works a hedge three metres away and you physically cannot see it. Then it happens with a dragonfly, and a lizard, and a bird in the tree you are standing under. Close focus is not a birding feature, it is a looking at things feature, and it changes how often the binoculars come up.
Under 2.5 metres. Non-negotiable.
Eye relief, if you wear glasses
The distance behind the eyepiece where the full image is visible. With glasses on, you need roughly 16mm or more, or you get a black ring around everything and a permanent low-grade sense that the binoculars are broken.
Twist-up eyecups are the other half. If the cups only push in and out, they will not hold a position, and you will spend the whole walk adjusting them.
The magnification question, briefly

If you are choosing your first pair and you do not already know you are a shorebird person, take the 8x. The wider field is what gets you onto the bird at all, and a bird you found at 8x beats a bird you missed at 10x.
What to skip
Zoom binoculars. The mechanism costs you sharpness, brightness and alignment at every setting, in exchange for a number on the box.
Anything under about $120 new. Below that the glass is soft, the coatings are thin, and the hinge drifts. This is the one place where the cheap version does not merely underperform, it actively discourages you.
Image stabilisation, for now. It works. It is genuinely remarkable. It also adds weight and batteries, and it is the wrong first pair.
The actual recommendation
Whatever weighs about 650 grams, focuses to 2 metres, has twist-up eyecups, and is 8x42. Several companies make that binocular for around $300 and they are all fine, and the differences between them are much smaller than the difference between owning them and not.
Then spend the argument budget on going outside more, which is the only upgrade with an unlimited ceiling.
